Top 10 Non-Surgical Solutions for Aging Skin

May 26, 2023

Portrait showing the flabbiness adipose hanging skin under the eyes, ptosis and flabby skin beside the eyelid, smile lines beside the mouth, freckles and blemish on the face of the woman, health care and beauty concept.

Skin tends to lose elasticity with age. You may also develop more wrinkles and experience texture and color changes on your skin over time. However, while surgical options exist, many non-surgical techniques can reduce wrinkles and restore the skin’s youthful appearance.

Each technique varies and produces different results. You should talk to a skin specialist to see which skin treatment can yield the best results.

1. Retinoids

Retinoids refer to a group of substances resembling vitamin A. In the skin, vitamin A and other retinoids help regulate processes related to inflammation and immune system response.

They can reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture after several weeks of use. Topical creams containing retinoids usually require a prescription. This means you need to consult with a skin specialist to get a prescription. Tretinoin, tazarotene, and retinol are common retinoids for skin treatment.

Retinoids are safe to use, but you may encounter side effects such as temporary redness or dryness. Patients taking retinoids can temporarily become more prone to sunburn.

2. Sunscreen

UV exposure leads to skin damage that accumulates over the years. Sunscreens contain compounds such as zinc oxide that absorb UV rays and protect the skin from exposure.

Wearing daily sunscreen can prevent additional damage, allowing the skin to focus on repair and maintenance. Sunscreens are also crucial when using certain skin treatments that reduce UV resistance, such as retinoids.

3. Hydroxy Acids

Skin cells grow in the deeper layers of the skin and eventually get pushed out by newer cells. Exfoliation enhances the natural shedding process to help renew skin. Hydroxy acids act to stimulate exfoliation. Their acidic nature softens the epidermis and makes it easier for dead skin cells to slough off.

Another function of hydroxy acids is to help other medications penetrate deeper into the skin. Common examples include:

  • Salicylic acid
  • Lactic acid
  • Glycolic acid

They are commonly found in chemical peeling agents, medications, and regular skincare products such as face washes.

4. Chemical Peels

Chemical peels use an acid solution to remove dead cells from the outer layer of the skin. This helps improve skin tone and texture. While some chemical peels are available over the counter, they generally have weak formulas, which means they do not deliver the same results as professionally applied chemical peels.

5. Niacinamide

Niacinamide is a vitamin B3 present in many food products. Vitamin B3 is used by cells during metabolism, allowing them to obtain energy properly and run cellular functions. Adequate levels of vitamin B3 are essential for tissue growth and maintenance.

Vitamin B3 is also an antioxidant. It protects cells from oxidative damage and helps keep tissues in great shape.

6. Vitamins C and E

During normal activity, cells may produce free radicals and other highly reactive substances. The powerful antioxidants vitamins C and E protect the skin from oxidative stress.

Vitamin C is also required for collagen synthesis. Collagen is the main structural protein that gives skin resilience and flexibility. Low levels of vitamin C can lead to premature skin aging.

Meanwhile, vitamin E is fat-soluble and easily absorbed by the skin. Once absorbed, it exhibits its potent antioxidant activity to protect cells.

7. Botox

Botox is botulinum toxin type A, one of the substances produced by botulism bacteria. Botox can be safely used in tiny amounts to relax muscles underneath the skin, helping to smooth out wrinkles. For the best results, patients should opt for repeat sessions every three to four months. Privé Aesthetics provides 10-minute Botox treatments with no required downtime, perfect for busy students and professionals.

8. Dermal Fillers

Skin can lose moisture and volume as it ages, leading to more pronounced wrinkles. Dermal fillers can reverse volume loss by injecting natural substances into problem areas to increase skin volume and smooth imperfections.

The most common dermal filler is hyaluronic acid. It is a natural substance present in the skin and other connective tissues. Juvéderm® and Restylane® are dermal fillers that work against wrinkles near the nose, mouth, and lips.

9. Laser Treatments

Laser treatment requires the use of a specialized device that produces strong light in short pulses. Laser treatments deliver direct energy to the skin, stimulating the formation of new collagen fibers. Eventually, treated skin becomes less loose and wrinkled.

10. Microneedling

With microneedling, tiny needles pierce the top layers of the skin. Similar to laser application, microneedling stimulates the skin’s healing process and increases collagen levels.

The result is skin that looks younger and is more resilient against damage. Privé Aesthetics combines microneedling with light treatment and other techniques for potent anti-aging effects.
